چکیده

Solitary wave propagation in surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal cells controlled by surface anchoring of the alignment layers is investigated for different conditions of alignment on the two opposite surfaces. We show that the critical field Ec, where the speed of the solitary wave becomes zero, is finite for asymmetric alignment on two surfaces. We also show that the polar anchoring energy difference wp between the alignment layers can be calculated by measuring Ec, and this depends on the rubbing condition and the material of the alignment layer. © 2008 American Institute of Physics. Calculation of the efficiency of polarization-insensitive surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid-crystal diffraction gratings.

A rigorous analysis is presented of the diffraction efficiency of a polarization-insensitive surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid-crystal (SSFLC) phase grating, taking full account of the internal structure of the ferroelectric liquid-crystal layer. When no field is applied, the twisted director profile in the relaxed state gives an optimum diffraction efficiency for a device thickness betwe...

Solitary wave propagation in antiferroelectric liquid crystal cells and the quadrupolar term in the interlayer interaction.

Planar antiferroelectric liquid crystal (AFLC) cells exhibit propagating solitary waves. By measuring the retardation and the apparent tilt angle, we find that the conventional model for the solitary wave propagation in AFLCs is not generally applicable. The model being proposed here shows that the solitary wave propagation both along and normal to the smectic layer plane can be explained by a ...

Numerical investigation of free surface flood wave and solitary wave using incompressible SPH method

Simulation of free surface flow and sudden wave profile are recognized as the most challenging problem in computational hydraulics. Several Eulerian/Lagrangian approaches and models can be implemented for simulating such phenomena in which the smoothed particle hydrodynamics method (SPH) is categorized as a proper candidate. The incompressible SPH (ISPH) method hires a precise incompressible hy...

Investigating the Third Order Solitary Wave Generation Accuracy using Incompressible Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics

This paper examines the generation and propagation of a Third order solitary water wave along the channel. First the Incompressible Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (ISPH) numerical method is described and the boundary condition handling method is presented. The numerical model is then used to simulate solitary wave propagation along the fixed depth channel. The numerical results are compared wi...

Measurement of the polarization profile across a surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal cell using the pyroelectric laser-intensity-modulation method

The pyroelectric technique, called the laser-intensity-modulation method, was used for investigations of the spatial distribution of the pyroelectric coefficient that gives information about the director profile in ferroelectric liquid crystal ~FLC! cells. The pyroelectric current from a cell, illuminated by the intensity-modulated laser beam, was measured as a function of the modulation freque...
